Define the critical function
List which cameras must record, doors must make local decisions, alarms must report and network switches must remain available during a utility outage. Ask how long each function should last and who acts when it fails. A single UPS at a recorder may leave upstream switches or the camera power unprotected.
Map the real electrical path
Trace mains, supplies, PoE switches, controllers, gateways and storage. Account for peak device draw, aging battery capacity and power domains. Where egress or fire interfaces are involved, obtain qualified review of required behavior; the backup design cannot be set by a generic security rule.
Test a controlled outage
With authorization, remove a planned feed or use an approved simulation and observe the entire workflow. Check recording, communications, local credential decisions, trouble signals, transfer and clean recovery. Record measured runtime or manufacturer-guided test method and any device that drops unexpectedly.
Own the next replacement
Document battery model and age, load assumptions, topology, test date, exceptions and replacement schedule. Include disposal and safe handling. An untested battery can make a dashboard look healthy until the first real outage.
Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.
A working scenario
The recorder has a UPS but a PoE switch feeding exterior cameras loses power immediately.
The decision to make before buying
Trace every dependency of the protected workflow, including network and local power.
A useful acceptance test
Run a permitted outage and restoration test with measured function and runtime.
What the owner should receive
Keep topology, battery inventory, results, alarms, replacements and limits.
Questions owners ask
How should runtime be specified?
Define the functions and duration at the actual load, then size and test the power chain accordingly. Port count alone is insufficient.
Can backup power change door safety behavior?
It can. Have qualified design and code professionals verify the approved lock, exit and fire sequence for each opening.
Project conditions and responsibilities vary. Confirm the actual scope and test plan with the owner and project team.
