Power over Ethernet is a power budget

A switch port being available does not mean it can power the next device.

List actual device draw

Cameras with heaters, readers, access points and AV endpoints may demand different PoE classes and peak power. Verify manufacturer requirements for the chosen model.

Check the supporting chain

Review switch budget, uplink, UPS runtime, cable suitability and room cooling with IT. A new device can affect the capacity available to others.

Test under expected use

Confirm the device stays online during normal high-load conditions and document the port, VLAN and power reservation for future changes.

Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.

A working scenario

A switch has spare ports, yet cameras with heaters shut off in winter when their peak draw exceeds the shared PoE budget.

The decision to make before buying

List each device model's required class and peak draw, switch per-port and total capacity, cable path, UPS runtime and room cooling. Avoid treating advertised port count as power availability.

A useful acceptance test

Run a sample device in its high-load mode; watch switch allocation and voltage or power alarms. Check the remaining budget against simultaneous peak conditions.

What the owner should receive

Keep a port and power worksheet, device inventory, UPS assumptions, measured exceptions and future reservation.

Questions owners ask

What is the first calculation to request?

Add device model-specific peak draws, then compare them with both per-port capability and total switch budget. Include environmental modes such as a camera heater and any power the switch itself needs from the UPS. A switch with twenty free jacks may have no practical power headroom.

What happens when the budget is exceeded?

The behavior varies by equipment and configuration: ports may refuse power, shed load or become unstable. Test high-load conditions and document port priority where supported. Review the UPS and electrical capacity before expanding.
