Sound masking should match the room

Uniform volume across a floor can cause new complaints instead of reducing distraction.

Identify different acoustic areas

Open offices, reception, corridors and enclosed rooms have different background sound and speech privacy needs. Agree on the owner’s goals for each zone.

Coordinate installation

Speaker locations, ceiling conditions, power and AV or paging interactions affect the design. Set levels through measured tuning rather than a single default.

Review after occupancy

Listen and measure with the space in normal use, then document final zone settings and who may change them.

Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.

A working scenario

A quiet office adds sound masking, but a nearby meeting area becomes distracting because zones are set by a floor plan rather than actual acoustics.

The decision to make before buying

Define privacy and comfort goals, occupancy patterns, ceiling construction, background sound, controls and accessible communication requirements with the design team.

A useful acceptance test

Measure and listen in representative occupied positions; compare levels and transitions across zones and review complaints after tuning.

What the owner should receive

Retain zone plan, settings, measurement method, operator controls and review date for layout changes.

Questions owners ask

Can one setting work for the entire office?

Usually the goal varies with background noise, ceiling materials, speech privacy and occupants. Zones should be tuned to actual use and transitions; excessive masking can make a space tiring. A qualified acoustic design and on-site measurement are appropriate.

How do you evaluate comfort after installation?

Listen and measure at representative desks, meeting edges and circulation paths under normal occupancy. Record complaints, settings and any layout changes before retuning so a later technician understands why a zone differs.
