Set the policy first
The owner determines how much footage is needed, who may access it and when it should be deleted, subject to applicable obligations. Different locations may have different needs.
Model realistic streams
Use codec, frame rate, resolution, recording schedule, motion profile and camera number to estimate storage and network load. Leave room for normal growth and failure tolerance.
Verify after installation
Check actual recording history, oldest available footage and health alerts. Revisit the estimate if scene activity or settings change.
Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.
A working scenario
A request for 30 days of video lacks frame rate, codec, resolution, motion and camera count assumptions. Capacity cannot be promised from a round number.
The decision to make before buying
Estimate sustained and peak bitrates per stream, required days, redundancy, overhead, growth and any cloud transfer. Distinguish continuous from event recording and confirm the owner's retention policy.
A useful acceptance test
Record representative streams over a real interval; compare observed data rate with estimate and simulate retrieval near the retention boundary.
What the owner should receive
Keep an auditable worksheet, settings, actual measurements, chosen policy, alert thresholds and the owner of periodic review.
Questions owners ask
Can a vendor guarantee thirty days from camera count alone?
No. Codec, resolution, frames per second, scene complexity, motion settings, bitrate limits, audio and overhead all affect consumption. Cloud egress and redundancy can matter too. Use a documented worksheet and representative measurements to size the system against the actual policy.
What if storage fills earlier than expected?
Set an alert threshold and review camera streams, changed settings, drive health and actual motion. Do not silently reduce resolution or days without owner approval; it can defeat the original evidence objective. Record the chosen adjustment and retest retrieval.
