Camera glare after dark

A strong daytime view may fail when headlights, signage or glass reflections appear.

Identify the light sources

Walk the approach at night. Vehicle headlights, wet pavement, bright signs and backlit entrances can defeat automatic exposure or overwhelm a plate view.

Adjust the whole scene

Consider mounting angle, lens, illumination and the purpose of each camera. A second view may be more useful than pushing one camera to do incompatible jobs.

Capture a representative sample

Test the likely vehicle speed and person location under actual conditions. Save approved sample stills and note any unresolved limitation at handoff.

Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.

A working scenario

A camera sees headlights reflected from glass and its auto exposure darkens the person at the doorway. The failure appears only at the hour the owner cares about.

The decision to make before buying

Review lens angle, nearby lighting, IR reflection, backlight, seasonal conditions and site rules on adding fixtures. Do not assume a sensor setting fixes poor geometry.

A useful acceptance test

Capture the same permitted target at several nighttime positions and weather conditions where feasible; compare frames against the agreed view objective.

What the owner should receive

Archive dated samples, camera settings, light conditions, revised mounting options and accepted limitations.

Questions owners ask

Why can more infrared make the image worse?

Nearby glass, soffits or reflective objects can return IR light into the lens, washing out foreground detail while distant people remain dark. Headlights and exterior lighting can also force exposure changes. Change angle, placement or scene lighting as appropriate before simply increasing power.

Which samples should be saved?

Keep the relevant target at the intended distance under the worst credible lighting, alongside a wider context frame. Note date, time, weather and settings. Compare the result with the view's stated purpose, not with a manufacturer demo.
