Door signals worth watching

A door can badge correctly while its physical behavior creates daily friction.

Look beyond reader feedback

A repeated held-open signal may come from a closer, latch, strike, contact or traffic pattern. Tie the event to the physical opening before changing software thresholds.

Review the pattern

Compare alarms by time, door, occupancy and recent maintenance. Ask operators to describe what users actually do when the alert appears.

Fix and retest

Repair the identified condition, then confirm secure latch, entry, exit and event timing. Update the opening record rather than merely silencing the nuisance alert.

Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.

A working scenario

The event log shows a door opening longer each week before a latch finally fails. A health check can turn that pattern into a targeted repair.

The decision to make before buying

Choose useful indicators: held-open duration, repeated deny events, forced-open reports, offline panels, battery readings and physical closer behavior. Avoid alerting on every normal delivery.

A useful acceptance test

Check a sample of flagged doors in person and compare event history with actual latch and closer function. Tune thresholds against normal occupancy.

What the owner should receive

Maintain a symptom-to-action table, priority, repair assignment, retest evidence and trend review rather than only a dashboard count.

Questions owners ask

Can logs predict every door fault?

No. A strike can work electrically while the latch, closer or hinge deteriorates. Event trends help prioritize field inspection, especially when held-open durations rise or the same controller drops offline. Use observations to trigger investigation rather than labeling every anomaly a hardware failure.

How can nuisance alerts be reduced?

Compare alerts with deliveries, cleaning, shift changes and normal door use. Choose thresholds by opening and set an owner to tune them. After repair, watch the same signal for recurrence and keep the physical test result beside the software event.
