Agree on the test standard
The approved specification should name cable category, test limit and whether permanent-link or channel performance is required. A simple wire-map does not prove every specified parameter.
Match reports to labels
Each result should identify the endpoint and panel port on the final record. Failed links, repairs and retests need separate traceable entries.
Hand results to IT
Coordinate switch patching and PoE commissioning after the physical links are accepted. Keep the raw files where the owner can retrieve them.
Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.
A working scenario
The panel label and copper test report both say “A-12,” but one identifies a closet and the other an outlet. Shared naming is part of acceptance.
The decision to make before buying
Define cable category, test limit, permanent-link or channel test, identifier format and the accepted tester output before installation.
A useful acceptance test
Sample links against endpoints and raw certification, then review failed, repaired and retested runs individually rather than as a pass percentage.
What the owner should receive
Deliver raw files, label legend, panel and outlet map, calibration information where required by scope, and exception disposition.
Questions owners ask
What is the difference between wire map and certification?
Wire map checks basic conductor connection and certain faults. A specified category test measures multiple performance parameters against a defined limit using an appropriate tester and configuration. The approved project specification determines which evidence is required; keep raw results tied to physical labels.
How should failures be closed?
Record the original result, location, repair performed and retest under the same link ID. Do not overwrite a failed result with a final “pass” that hides the trail. Verify patch panel and outlet identifiers in the field.
