Define failure signals
Camera offline, storage fault, disabled recording, clock drift and blocked lens are different problems. Decide which conditions should create an alert and which need periodic review.
Assign a recipient
An alert without an owner is another unattended dashboard. Document how IT, security and service staff decide whether the device, switch, storage or network is at fault.
Review recurring issues
Keep device identifiers and work orders together so repeat failures point to an underlying power, pathway or configuration issue.
Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.
A working scenario
A camera is offline for weeks because the recorder's red icon has no recipient. Health monitoring is a workflow with a responsible human.
The decision to make before buying
Decide which faults matter: loss of recording, obstructed view, storage threshold, time drift and device offline. Set routing, business-hour coverage and nuisance-alert thresholds.
A useful acceptance test
Disconnect a test camera within an approved window; measure detection, message delivery, acknowledgement, restoration and whether recording resumes.
What the owner should receive
Maintain alert ownership, thresholds, escalation schedule, fault history and periodic test results.
Questions owners ask
Which faults deserve an immediate alert?
Prioritize failures that remove critical coverage or evidence, such as lost recording, storage failure or key cameras offline. A transient network event and a critical entry camera unavailable for an hour may need different routing. Confirm the response commitment in the service agreement.
How should alerts be tested?
Cause a controlled fault with approval, observe detection and escalation, then restore service and verify normal recording. Record the times and responsible person. A dashboard color that nobody watches is not a notification plan.
