Bring systems into the construction sequence

Coordinate sleeves, risers, equipment rooms, device backboxes, power and network ahead of closed walls. Mark the party providing each element and its inspection or access deadline. A camera location agreed after a ceiling closes can create avoidable rework and schedule disputes.

Maintain one current device schedule

Track room and opening IDs across drawings, cable labels, field changes and software names. Record product submittals, licenses and owner IT prerequisites. When the architect changes a door or a tenant reassigns a room, route that change to all affected disciplines.

Reserve time for integrated tests

A device-specific checklist does not cover controlled door release, event-linked video or paging zones. Write expected scenarios with witnesses and dependencies before substantial completion. Capture blocked points with an owner and retest date instead of declaring every system complete together.

Make the handoff usable

Transfer as-built routes, test files, model and serial inventory, approved configurations, manuals, warranties, admin custody, training and open issues under contract scope. Have a building operator find an event and report a fault; their ability to use the system is part of readiness.

Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.

A working scenario

A new building reaches turnover with cameras installed but no active switch ports or verified rack map.

The decision to make before buying

Tie device schedule, pathways, power, IT and acceptance to the construction plan.

A useful acceptance test

Run cross-system scenarios with the actual operator and record unresolved dependencies.

What the owner should receive

Deliver coordinated drawings, link tests, credentials custody, training and exceptions.

Questions owners ask

When should the integrator join a project?

Early enough to coordinate pathways, equipment rooms, power, door details and IT handoffs before they are concealed or procured.

What is an incomplete turnover?

Unlabeled assets, missing administrator ownership, untested scenarios or open issues without a responsible party are signs the owner cannot reliably operate the installation.

Project conditions and responsibilities vary. Confirm the actual scope and test plan with the owner and project team.
