What to check in a cloud access control partner

A cloud interface does not resolve poor door hardware, weak governance or unclear outage behavior.

Map the opening first

Review locks, closer, request-to-exit, door contact, power, controller and approved egress sequence. A modern dashboard cannot compensate for a door that does not latch.

Ask what stays local

Confirm how credentials and schedules behave when the internet is unavailable, what events are buffered and what happens after connectivity returns. Review identity provider and administrator ownership with IT.

Price the lifecycle

Compare licenses, hardware replacement, support, data export and exit options in writing. Use a representative pilot opening and a signed test plan before a portfolio rollout.

Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.

A working scenario

A buyer hears that cloud access will simplify administration, but the proposal is silent about offline decisions and export of configuration data. Convenience and continuity should be evaluated together.

The decision to make before buying

Ask about credential handling, multi-factor administration, outage behavior, local cache, firmware, data ownership, backups, integrations, licensing, and termination. Confirm the exact controller and software version.

A useful acceptance test

In a controlled test, interrupt the approved network path, check scheduled access and audit events, restore connectivity, and verify synchronization. Demonstrate an administrator departure and a permitted export.

What the owner should receive

File a vendor response matrix, architecture diagram, data agreement, lifecycle cost assumptions, recovery plan, and unresolved exceptions. Verify platform promises in the actual contract.

Questions owners ask

What should happen when the vendor relationship ends?

The contract should explain how to export configuration and events, recover accounts, transfer administration and handle retained data and installed hardware. A low initial subscription is less attractive if exit is impractical.

What proves resilience?

Test the actual controller's local behavior, power reserve, credential changes and event replay during a supervised outage. Obtain version-specific documentation and contract terms.

Project conditions and responsibilities vary. Confirm the actual scope and test plan with the owner and project team.
